The Year of the Lord's Favor

“Good News!”

As a church we have walked through Advent - the time of preparation for Christ’s coming to earth. We’ve celebrated Christmastide - the days of rejoicing over the birth of Messiah. Through these important times we’ve considered how Jesus came to earth and we’ve marveled over the grace that brought Him to us.

Why did He come to earth? In a few weeks we’ll enter the Season of Lent - a time we set aside to fully comprehend the work He came to do. But to prepare us, let’s listen to the words Jesus used to tell us why He came. One day He stood up in the synagogue and read from Isaiah’s prophecy…

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” — Luke 4:18-19

After he read those words, He said to the people, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” In other words, “I am the One that Isaiah said was coming and this is why I came.”

We’re going to spend time listening to those words and seeing the multiplicity of meaning behind them. We’re going to see grace, mercy, forgiveness, hope and joy as they apply to us as individuals and as they impact our world.
